English Version
Hong Kong Dog Rescue is a rare and true charity in that everybody involved is a volunteer. Sally the Founder, Rachael the Volunteer Co-ordinator, Julie the Accountant, Angela the Chinese Homing Co-ordinator, Bambi our Vet Visits Co-ordinator, Candice our Shop Manager, all the Kennel Volunteers and Dogwalkers, people that help with Marketing, Fundraising, Events, the Website, Photography……ALL are volunteers! This means all the money donated and raised through various events goes directly towards helping the dogs. It also means that our volunteers are incredibly important to us and we feel very lucky to have such a dedicated team who turn up in all weathers to take care of our dogs. We are biased but we think we have the best volunteers in Hong Kong!
The range of volunteer opportunities are wide with HKDR, and because we are a small charity, you will be able to get involved in a very real way and see the impact of your efforts.
Our main requirement for volunteers is at the kennels where we have between 40-50 dogs staying at any one time that need to be looked after. We have a fantastic team down there but because Hong Kong is such a transient place we are always looking to recruit more volunteers.
Most of the volunteers at the kennels are either Kennel Volunteers or Dog Walkers. A Kennel Volunteer will clean out the kennels, feed and water the dogs, and administer any necessary medication. It can be quite dirty work but the love of the dogs and seeing them comfortable, clean and happy in the kennels at the end of the shift makes it all worthwhile. The dog walkers are equally important, not only in terms of exercising the dogs but in socializing them, teaching them basic manners, and getting them used to traffic and noise. All of these things make them much easier to home.
Other areas you can get involved with are washing and grooming dogs. Many of the new arrivals have been neglected, and have matted and filthy coats. Socializing and petting dogs is also very important as it encourages the dogs to trust again and perhaps get used to situations/people they haven’t encountered before. Of course anyone with any skills in training (positive reinforcement methods only) are always welcome and we are always short on volunteers with transportation or willing to help get dogs to the vet so we can get them fit and healthy for homing.
All these efforts combine to help our dogs achieve their potential of being healthy, loveable, confident ‘homeable’ dogs which is our ultimate aim. Volunteering at the kennels can be hard work but the reward is seeing the dogs flourish and thrive amongst so many caring people before they go on to their new lives and families.
Of course not everyone wants to be so hands on with the dogs but would still like to be a volunteer. We can always use help with fundraising, events, public relations, marketing and administration. We need people who would like to have a role in these strategic areas, so do get in contact if you think you can help.
Lastly, we are always in need of short term foster carers for dogs that need a bit more care and attention than they will get at the kennels. These dogs may be very young, recovering from sickness or an operation, or would just benefit from being socialized in a home environment. If you think you can offer a dog a temporary home please get in touch.
